Matt Burns

For the past 20 years, Matt has been a Firefighter/Paramedic for the San Diego Fire Department (twelve years Heavy Rescue). He recently retired and relocated with his family to Minnesota.

Before serving his community, he served his country in the Marine Corps as well as Army Special Forces. Prior to his military experience, he was an instructor of Kenpo Karate.

Matt was first introduced to CrossFit in mid 2007. After years of typical gym routines, cycling, and even running a marathon. All it took was one WOD and he was hooked. Although he trained constantly, and even with various modes; he felt that when he trained to gain strength, he lacked endurance. And if he focused on endurance sports, he lost muscle and strength. CrossFit enabled him to simultaneously develop endurance, strength and power, and completely changed his view of what is possible through fitness. Consequently it has changed his life, and his only regret about CrossFit is that he didn’t start sooner.

Since starting CrossFit he has rekindled his passion for teaching. He holds the following instructor certifications:

-CrossFit Level I Coach
-Olympic Lifting
-CrossFit Kids
-CrossFit Kettlebells
-CrossFit Gymnastics
-CrossFit Football
-Powerlifting with Louie Simmons
-CrossFit Endurance

Brian Coleman

In 2008, Brian was getting bored with his workout routine. Monday – back day, Tuesday – leg day…yada yada yada. Also, after seeing his father suffer from illness, he wanted to pursue a fitness program that would prolong his life. So that spring he hooked up with one of his buddies in the Department of Defense and discovered CrossFit. After seeing, and more importantly feeling results in less than a month, he was hooked.

A high percentage of CrossFitters have backgrounds or jobs that call for physical fitness (i.e. law enforcement, firefighters, martial artists, etc.). Brian isn’t one of those. He has a nine-to-five job and sits at a desk all day. Because of this, Brian believes that everyone can benefit from CrossFit, and enjoys seeing the CrossFit philosophies come to fruition. In July 2009 he became Level 1 Certified and shortly after began instructing at CrossFit Transformation in Roseville, MI. There he had the joy of training individuals with varying backgrounds from competitive athletes to his 60 year old mother. He also competed with the Transformation team in the 2011 Central East Regionals, taking 5th out of 29 teams. Brian has now joined CrossFit Woodbury and is looking forward to growing as a trainer and athlete with his new family.

Since discovering CrossFit, Brian has also educated himself in functional nutrition. He believes that an hour in the gym can’t wipe away 23 hours of bad decisions. He’ll still have a beer from time to time, but he’s noticed that his fitness level didn’t drastically increase until he developed a nutrition plan to complement his effort in the gym. Brian is always ready to share this knowledge with any athletes ready to take their fitness to the next level.
